Recently, a very short poem with only 13 Chinese characters has sparked heated debates online.

At a poem Grand Prix competition held in the city of Xianning, in central China's Hubei Province, the poem entitled "Hometown" won the first prize with a bonus of 100,000 yuan, or 15,400 U.S. dollars.

The 13-character poem conveyed a message saying "The hometown is so small that it could only contain two characters maximally." But it didn't reveal what the exact two characters were.

此外，在咸宁市的一所公园的东南角，还专门设置了诗歌《故乡》的石刻，并举行了揭幕仪式。

The full text of the poem was also carved on a stone in a local park.

该华文诗歌大奖赛为咸宁市第二次举行，而在2014年举行的首届大奖赛中，由一名交警邓诗鸿创作的诗歌《咸宁辞典》荣获一等奖，奖金高达50万元。

This is the second time the competition was held in Xianning.

The first competition was held in 2014, when a traffic police officer won the Grand Prix with his work "Xianning Dictionary," winning a total bonus of 500,000 yuan, or 77,000 U.S. dollars.

获奖消息公布后，引发了网友的热议。网友们对此作品褒贬不一。据说，有六成网友给予了负面评价，认为完全看不懂。

After the most recent winning poem was made public, netizens passed different judgement towards it. Their opinions varied greatly. Some netizens spoke highly of the poem, saying it leaves readers enough room for imagination and it has abundant implication even though it's short. Others said the poem was too short to be called a poem and it seems to be deliberately mystifying readers. Some even thought that such a result was a total joke.

About 60 percent of netizens expressed negative opinions towards the work, saying they totally couldn't make head or tail of it.

根据此诗的作者，来自云南《曲靖日报》的记者施云所述，这首诗在去年6月份创作，当时全国都在谈乡愁，他在思考什么是乡愁，觉得这个概念很大，几乎没有人能说清楚，但是乡愁最关键的地方是故乡，而故乡又是什么?他也说不清楚，便想把这个回答交给读者，于是写下了这首只有13个字的诗。

According to the author Shi Yun, a 45-year-old journalist with the newspaper Qujing Daily in southwest China's Yunnan Province, the poem was produced in June 2014. He wrote the poem since the topic of homesickness was widely discussed during that period of time in China.

施云特别强调，《故乡》之所以最后没有交待两个字是什么，就是要给读者留下想象的空间。

He didn't disclose what the exact two characters were because he wanted to leave some room for the readers' imagination.

对于这首诗，曾因创作《穿过大半个中国去睡你》而走红的诗人余秀华认为，虽然有些不足，但按照诗歌来说，比较小巧，有诗歌的节奏，所以总的来说还不错。

Yu Xiuhua, a famous poet, said Shi's poem is small and delicate and has the proper rhythms, thus in short, it's good.

咸宁市委常委、宣传部长王济民则表示，这首诗虽短但有力，给他带来震撼和无限的遐想。诗歌在于韵味，不是越长越好，反而越短的诗歌文字张力越强。

Wang Jimin, a local official, said this poem brought him endless reveries and that it's short yet powerful.
